W.M.D Interview
Just a quick update. I have so much footage from the W.M.D gig, as well as photos and pictures, it’s far too much to be publishing in one go.
So here’s the interview for you to listen to with a mixture of photos old and new. The rest will be published in the next day or two.
Thanks for your interest and continued support!
Enjoy!
Gig Review plus band feature – WMD

Don’t miss it!
Gig Review – Diamond Head + support from Fires That Divide
As soon as I saw this line up I knew it was going to be a great night. The Robin 2 is a well known and well loved local venue, and has a great reputation for hosting some massive names. Last gig I came to was Inglorious, and before that Dirty DC, both were filled to the brim.
So there was no surprises when I saw the place filling up rapidly, well before the support band were due on. Fires That Divide are a 4 piece rock band from the West Midlands, formed back in 2014. They describe their material as an eclectic range of musical creativity delivered with a hard punch.

From left: Steve Knight (bass guitar), Kirk Shuttleworth (lead vocals and guitar), Steven Norton (guitar) and Marc Harris (drums).
For anyone who hasn’t heard of these guys before, why not take a look at my feature from earlier this year.
Okay so back to their latest performance. These guys showed that they had the balls to perform at big venues such as The Robin 2. Other than a couple of technical issues which were out of their control, they put on a strong performance, and had a good crowd of followers at the event.
They performed some new material which I particularly enjoyed, as well as some already established tunes such as Vector Man. Take a look at the video footage I caught along the way, and if you like what you see, why not visit Fires That Divide on facebook and give their page a like/follow! Or visit their website here.
I really hope to see Fires That Divide gigging again soon, as they are a force to be reckoned with, and after seeing them in this setting, supporting a massive band such as Diamond Head, I know this is where they belong. Well done lads!

I may still have a surprise or two up my sleeve involving this bunch, all will be revealed!

Then it was time for the headline act, Diamond Head. This band was originally formed in 1976 in the town of Stourbridge. The band is recognised as one of the leading members of the new wave of British heavy metal movement.

The current line up of the band is Brian Tatler – Guitars, Rasmus Bom Andersen – Vocals, Karl Wilcox – Drums, Dean Ashton – Bass, and Andy Abberley (Abbz) – Guitars
Needless to say, this band is well rehearsed and could probably but on a great show in their sleep, and this gig was no exception, a brilliant performance which delivered exactly what their fans expected and needed from them.
The star of the show for me will always be Brian Tatler, an amazing guitarist.
Take a look at some video footage I caught of these guys in action.

My Guitar Journey – Chapter 2 (part II)
As promised, I’ve had a go at House Of The Rising Sun. I think I actually forgot what song I was supposed to be playing half way through but hey-ho, it’s been a long day!
My Guitar Journey – Chapter 2
Firstly, my apologies for not uploading anything on this in a while, sometimes day to day life just gets in the way.
Anyway here is an attempt at Blackbird. Again its full of mistakes etc. but that’s where I am right now! Its amazing just how much worse I am when I know its being filmed too! (And the massive sigh at the end is a sigh of relief! It’s so difficult!)
I know that my finger picking is a bit haphazard, missing bits out just to keep time with the music is a bad habit of mine, but hopefully things will start to improve with more practice. If anyone has any exercises they can send in for me to practice, I would be very grateful!
I will more than likely upload another clip of me attempting House Of The Rising Sun very soon.
Thanks for your feedback and support guys! Keep it coming!

Rockers Through The Ages Xmas Party
This gig was kindly hosted by Wendy Shone, owner of The Giffard Arms Wolverhampton. Organised and promoted by Brett Hall and Doddy White, who certainly came up trumps with this line up, which was a sure fire way to fill The Giffard. The Rockers Through The Ages Xmas Party was designed to raise money for a great cause, Compton Hospice.
Kicking off the performances were Hollowstar, a 4 piece hard-hitting dirty rock band originating from Cambridgeshire. Never seen them before, but after watching their assault of in your face rock music that certainly got the pulse racing, I will be looking out for these guys in the future, and hope to get up close and personal with a cheeky interview if at all possible.

These guys certainly put on a brilliant performance despite some technical issues as you will see on one of the videos. They took it all in their stride and their set was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The stage was well and truly warmed up in preparation for the next band on this awesome line up.
If Hollowstar tickle your fancy, why not visit/like their facebook page, or click here for twitter

Naked Sunday

After a quick change over, it was time for Naked Sunday to take the stage. I’ve been following this band for some time now, and was keen to see them, as they are always guaranteed to spice things up with their unique, dirty rock n roll performances.
Tonight, they promised some surprises, and delivered the biggest surprise which was in the form of an additional guitarist, Alex Williams on stage for two of their songs, Diamonds and Pearls and A Dozen Red Roses.
From start to finish it was clearly one of the best live performances from Naked Sunday that I have ever witnessed, and having an extra guitar on stage gave a little extra something to the performance.
It was also very clear that they themselves were having a ball up there, and that came across to the audience very well.
The below video is my favourite tune at the moment from this band, called Reaper. Martin Stanyer put everything into his performance of this, even mentioning a few of the people in the audience by name part way through.
If Naked Sunday float your boat, why not head over to their facebook or twitter pages to give them a like/follow.

Next up were Electus, a 4 piece hard rock band from Wolverhampton. Again a confident and crowd pleasing performance was unleashed on the audience. A couple of issues with equipment, but this didn’t spoil the performances at all.

My favourite video from the set is the one below. Lead guitarist Gareth Daker was awesome and I would have loved to capture more of his performance on video but unfortunately I was at the wrong side of the stage to get any decent footage of him. These guys are definitely worth a watch, and they did a fantastic job of preparing the audience for the main attraction of the night.
If you want to know more about Electus, why not follow them on facebook or twitter?

A few minutes were taken by Brett Hall and Doddy White to raise money for their cause with a raffle and an auction.

And next, the moment we had all been waiting for……. Tom, Dale and Karl of The Bad Flowers from Cannock walked calmly onto the stage and started to prepare themselves. The audience knew what was about to come, and the room was packed out. The energy in the room rose to another level in excitement and anticipation of what was about to come.
This band are well known for their thunderous rock n roll which leaves audiences astounded, and this gig was no exception, they performed their hearts out as always. The relentless attack of elaborate drumming from the talented ‘animal’, Karl Selickis, the heavy bass delivered with tonnes of attitude by Dale Tonks and the pure, powerful vocals and exceptional guitar work from Tom Leighton delivered an earth shattering experience to their fans which finished the night off perfectly.

The Bad Flowers really do capture the hearts of the audience, always performing at full throttle and with a genuine raw talent that you cannot buy. I’m in no doubt that this appearance will be one of the last ‘smaller venues’ these guys perform, as they have some fantastic shows lined up for 2018, including Steelhouse Festival.
I’m just happy that I had the privilege of seeing these guys perform at such a personal level, and I’m excited to see what’s in store for them in the coming year.
My first video for ‘my guitar journey’
Tomorrow I will be uploading my first video of me attempting a cover. I know I have a long way to go, but I would appreciate your constructive feedback guys.
It’s going to be an achievement in itself if I actually get the camera pointing in the right direction, never mind anything else!
Thanks for your continued support, and I look forward to hearing from you!
Loved seeing Buzzard performing Pretty Vacant – Great song!
Music Review – Buzzard – Valium Gorillas
Buzzard are a three piece Grunge Rock power trio with Punk undertones to their sound. Formed in 2011, they comprise of Jimmy Croutear on guitar and vocals, Andy Vernon on bass and vocals, and Justin James on drums and vocals. They produce and perform mostly original material and are based in Stourbridge, UK. The band have a hunger for great things and have hit the ground running hard showcasing new material for “Vallium Gorillas” live at venues across the UK along with their now cult classic debut album songs mixed in. “We feel our 13 track album perfectly demonstrates our varied sub genre influences such as Motorhead, Foo Fighters, QOTSA, Nirvana, plus hints of ACDC and The Sex Pistols etc. If you’re a fan of any of those or similar, chances are you will dig our album which is available to physically buy at all live shows and on popular streaming websites.” said Jimmy Croutear.
First listing on the album is 2011 Dursley. I asked Jimmy what this was about and here’s what he said.
“2011 Dursley is a recording of someone close to us and no longer with us who sadly passed away in the very early beginnings of the band. The audio was ripped from a video of our first ever gig together which was a birthday party. Justin then mixed this with a sample of Kamikaze thus making a fun but emotional pre-intro to the hard hitting ‘Kamikaze’. To those close to us since the beginning they will instantly understand it’s a nod to a good person who believed in us so much, to those new to us it’s a fun get ready for some noise moment.” Jimmy told me.
Kamikaze is my favourite track of the album, it gives you a massive boot up the rear and insists that you rock out to it. The strong bass lines and guitar riffs give this track a robust feel to it. Vocals from Jimmy finish it off well. This is the style I like from Buzzard.
You Deserve Better has unusual effects to it, but there’s still no mistaking the Buzzard signature sound with its Punk undertones. I can imagine a lot of fans relating to the lyrics on this track, and joining in at a live performance. All Roads Lead To is another unusual track, which has a strange mix of sounds running through it, however, it seems to work well. The acoustic guitar eventually takes priority over the beat, and this accompanied by Jimmy’s vocals evolves into quite a pleasant track. Jimmy told me “All Roads Lead To is the first of a handful of acoustic songs to be heard on the album. After our success performing acoustically at Wolves Fest, we felt the need to showcase both our adaptable electric and acoustic sides of the band, and also a sense of gained maturity as individuals since our first record. A commercial example of this would be the “In Your Honour” Album by The Foo Fighters, the title of the song is a nod to our first album also called All Roads Lead To.
Step It Up is another strong track on the album, with its powerful guitar and impressive drum beat along with the coarseness of Jimmy’s voice alongside a haunting female voice it makes for a good listen. I asked Jimmy who the female vocalist was and this is what he said. ‘The guest harmonies and vocals are provided by Emily Abbiss who is an amazing singer songwriter and close friend of the band. When recording ‘Valium Gorillas’ we felt the need to re-record ‘Step It Up’ as it was too much of a good song to leave behind as the demo version originally recorded by Chris Smith of The Den Studios (RIP). We had progressed so much more as a band between this version and starting the recording of the album. After laying everything down we still felt something was missing, so I decided to overdub a guitar solo and mix in blended dirty and also clean open chord guitar tones to give a richer, glossy feel. After all this the song still felt incomplete. After listening to some old school 90’s pop and taking influence, I then asked Emily if she would be interested in helping experiment with added harmonies. The idea was an instant hit with the band and we recorded the vocals shortly after, thus completing the new version of the song. We feel the vocal definitely adds a soulful, intense vibe to the track that is both emotional and encouraging. The song is about overcoming depression.
Isaiah 53 was something completely different, and is a religious reference, so for this I turned to the band to explain. “We are forever looking at ways to outdo our earlier work and also do something a little different to stand out
. You often hear of solo piano or acoustic arrangements, but for a bass solo instrumental to appear, that’s certainly something else, and also suits the bands personality very well. The idea is a nod to Cliff Burton of Metallica who was an amazing bassist and a huge influence on Andy. The track is designed to feel both soothing and also haunting at the same time. The title is a religious reference. We feel the positioning of the track on the album perfectly breaks up the heaviness for a short while before jumping straight back into it with ‘Internet Superstar’ our current single.”
After listening to this track a number of times, I would like to say a huge well done to Buzzard, in particular Andy Vernon for this, amazing track. It certainly grabs your attention, and is quite a journey. Thanks Andy!
Internet Superstar is a compelling track which you just have to enjoy along with the video, here’s the link:
Proud is one of a cluster of acoustic tracks which is a combination of acoustic guitar, Jimmy’s vocals, a cajon drum, an electronic bass, and bags of Buzzard’s own twist. It certainly gives this band a uniqueness to their sound, and shows that these guys are very capable musicians. The guitar solos are an electric guitar with a clean tone. Under The Tree is wow, a completely different sound, melodic vocals and a catchy tune that gets your foot tapping, and you just want to have a sing-a-long to it. A very nice, very different track that just adds to the showcase of this band’s many talents. It’s poles apart from any other track on the album. Covered By the Blood seems to have religious references in the lyrics, and is another strong acoustic track which I thoroughly enjoyed, and would hope to hear this live in the near future. Although acoustic, it has hijacked some elements of the aggressive, gritty sound that Buzzard are known for. Another Chain takes you back to the sounds that Buzzard are well known for, gritty vocals, punk undertones, strong bass lines and chunky guitar riffs. Another strong track in my opinion. Frustration continues with the hard rocking theme giving you another opportunity to rock out. Step It Up Demo finishes the album off nicely, a classic track from these guys.
‘Valium Gorillas‘ takes you on a journey through many different music styles, including the much loved Punk and Rock signature sound which remind me so much of the days of the Sex Pistols but you have to give them credit for how they have combined this sound with many other elements from a variety of genres, to come up with a unique Buzzard concoction. It most definitely excites me to hear the combinations that they have showcased on this album, and I look forward to hearing more from them in the future. In summary, this album is a strong demonstration of the many talents these guys possess, but I still feel there is so much more to come, so watch this space!
